America's Got Talent 4

By  Arthur Perkins

Tonight was the second group of 12 acts competing in the quarterfinals (round of 48) for 5 slots in the semifinals (round of 20). One interesting misunderstanding was Piers telling a contestant that it is the semifinals when it actually was the live quarterfinals as clarified by Nick Cannon later.

It was the good, the bad and the ugly again, both in the acts and in the judging. I will rate each act as Yes (going to semifinals) -Y, Bubble (undecided) - B, or No (being eliminated due to sub-par performance) - N.

1. First up was the Fab 5 clogging in fireman's uniform. I thought this was tasteless and did not display them in a positive way. There was an accompanying light and sound show, but that only distracts attention from their clogging, which was still very good. Two adjectives Piers used to describe this act were angry and fantastic. He really liked it. Sharon says brilliant. David said "you came to play with you’re a game face on."     B

2. Charles DeWayne - pop music a la Whitney Houston. I am not pop music fan, but I thought his performance was fine. He sang "Just the Two of Us" while playing it on the piano. Sharon says great vocal, great piano, poor song selection. David - I love your voice. Piers says this performance is an improvement and Charles could be a major star. I agree and he will go to the semifinals.    Y

3. Carol Loo (not Lugo as I erroneously reported in earlier rounds) - what a mess! She was dolled up like a 25 year old descending in an open cage to the stage then she stripped into an outfit more akin to her real age to do hip hop. She danced with great energy but no discernable purpose. Nick called it "showing what her mother gave her." David said it was Hoff-tastic marrying the old with the new. Piers bluntly said "that's not a million dollar act".  Sharon says "you've got chutzpah dancing at age 63. She does, but so what? She is toast from my perspective.   N

4. Tony Heard and Rockin' Rory - Tony said before taking the stage that rehearsals had not totally worked all all the problems. He was so right. I loved this act the first time. Rory is still fantastic. The act is essentially dependent on Tony's throwing skills and he was off tonight. They are going home for sure.   N

5. Eleisha Miller - brash as only a talented 9 year old can be. Nick called her a "big personality" and she is all of that. She started on song/piano and then switched to song/dance. Her dance is way better than anything else and her piano playing is mediocre. Sharon says "you have problems on vocals". David says "I love your energy" and You make us feel terrific. Piers suggests that she fire her vocal coach and get a new one ASAP but he also said brilliant on stage and charming. I liked her much more than the previous times. She might make the semifinals.     B

6. Paradizo Dance - the premier act of this group. Zooey was so charming and so beautiful and so lithe in her acrobatics and so strong in her one lift of David that you could not help loving this act. The Hoff (also David) says "I love everything about you."  and "You have shown that you can sustain a Las Vegas show." Piers says incredible act and "I tried this lift out with Sharon in the dressing room and she went 3 blocks under." Sharon cheers their dance portion and displayed love for each other.    Y

7. Texas Tenors - this act was OK but not terrific. They elected to sing a patriotic song, trolling for home audience votes. David recommended that they sing a ballad, not a patriotic song in the future. Piers says a class act, with strong vocals and harmony. Sharon loved the white teeth of "the guy in the middle."   B

8. SQ Entertainment - I was not entertained by them. it's just a bit of good synchronization but I had the "who cares?" attitude while watching them perform. Sharon says mean but great; entertaining choreography. David says the dancing is great but he could not figure out the story line (maybe there was none). Piers says he did not think SQ should have made the quarterfinal rounds, but now he sees that he was wrong. He now thinks they're great.   N

9. Pete Peterkin - his jokes were slightly funny. His impersonation of Jamie Foxx impersonating President Obama impersonating Ray Charles singing was pretty good. The judges were confused. I'm not. I was a big supporter of Pete but now I think he's out. 7 acts have to be eliminated and he will be one of them.   N

10. Alzima - they ignored Piers' recommendation to do no singing and focus on violin playing. They elected instead to try to cram the act they liked down the throats of the judges and the audience. Bad move! They will be eliminated as a result. Their singing and stripper moves were the focus of their performance and the most polite comment I can make about both is marginal. They did little violin playing, which the judges had rated the strongest part of their act. Sharon and I both disliked their stripper moves. David thought their act was good previously but his comment was "tonight it was strippers on acid."    N

11. Beale Street Flippers - here is a wildcard act which looked very good in preliminary rounds, but their inability to elaborate and expand from their original act is now their downfall. These guys may be the greatest flippers in the world, but who cares? It is not a sustaining act that people will want to see multiple times.   N
12. Voices of Glory - I did not rave over this act, which was good but not exceptional tonight. I thought the lead singer (little Nadia) had limited talent and limited range and that the boys with the harmony are the key to this act. They sang "Walk On" from the Sound of Music, a good choice of song. David says "you are fantastic, terrific".  Piers, totally disagreeing with me, says that Nadia is the star of the act. Sharon says "Nadia, tonight was your night." I think this act will make the next round in reaction to those positive judges comments and that very few readers listen to me and by the time they receive this it is too late to vote.  Y
So, what does that  mean? My yes votes go to Charles DeWayne, Paradiso Dance and Voices of Glory. On the Bubble  are Fab 5, Eleisha Miller and Texas Tenors so I think 3 of that group will get in. I am going to say Fab 5 and Eleisha Miller. The acts I expect to see eliminated are Carol Loo, Tony Heard and Rockin' Rory, SQ Entertainment, Pete Peterkin, Alizma and the Beale Street Flippers. We'll see soon enough how I did rating this group
