The Biggest Loser 12: Episode 5 Recap

The Biggest Loser 12

by David McAlpine

This week on The Biggest Loser, it was the temptation we've seen yet on the show: immunity and a trip home, but at the cost of being the sole weigh-in for your team. It was a chance to spend one-on-one time with your trainer, but you'd be carrying the sole weight of your teammates.

Some people wanted the prize, but most didn't because they weren't ready for the pressure. One person who wanted it bad: Sunny. She picked lucky number 4 and, lo and behold, the puck (it was like a giant game of Plinko) landed in slot 4, giving Sunny and Bob a round trip to Frisco, Texas. Sunny starts jumping up and down, happy, but Bob gives her a reality check: this isn't going to be fun, and she shouldn't be excited. Oh snap.

At home, Bob is pushing Sunny harder than ever in the gym. He wants her to kick ass in the weigh-in, and she's concerned that she's not going to measure up. Sunny has been at the bottom of the Black Team's leaderboard every week, and she knows this is her chance to send the Black Team to the elimination room.

While in Texas, she treats Bob to her family, who is gathered around her 100 percent. Sometimes we see these contestants with families who are flippant or don't care, but Sunny's family is clearly behind her, and Bob sees that. Sunny opens up to him and says that she just wanted to hide, so she started gaining the weight, but now Bob wants to break her out of her shell. But he couldn't leave Texas without one thing: riding a bull. And he mastered it!

Back on the ranch, the other members of the Black Team start to fall apart. Jennifer and John do their own thing, while Antone and Joe commiserate on how much Bob holds their team together. Bob realizes over the phone that the team is struggling, and that he'll have some major emotional work to do when he gets back.

This week's challenge involved a lesson about orange soda. Each 20-ounce serving of soda contains 17 teaspoons of sugar, which shocked many of the contestants. But this week, they'd just be moving the soda, not drinking it.

Each contestant was given two 10-ounce glasses to fill up with orange soda, then transport through a bungee maze to a container on the other side. The Blue Team's line was half as tall as the other two teams' lines, since they had half the players. I really thought this might be the Blue Team's chance to win something since they were working with the handicap.

However, I was proven wrong. Bonnie was slower than molasses moving through the ropes, so it was again the Red Team versus the Black Team. Per usual, the Red Team started out in front, then the Black Team pulled ahead. Determined to not lose yet another challenge, the Red Team picked it up and pulled it out, giving them their first challenge win. Each contestant got to send one person of their choosing to a Biggest Loser fitness resort for two weeks.

But it wasn't about the challenge, it was about the weigh-in, and the results were:

Blue Team
Becky: -8 (-3.77%)
Bonnie: -4 (-1.72%)
TOTAL: -12 (-2.70%)

Red Team

Jessica: -6 (-2.74%)

Vinny: -10 (-2.62%)

Courtney: -6 (-2.53%)
Ramon: -7 (-2.25%)

TOTAL: -29 (-2.52%)

Black Team
Sunny: -14 (-5.81%)
John: -12 (-3.28%)
Jennifer: -8 (-2.84%)
Joe: -7 (-2.33%)
Antone: -4 (-1.05%)

So even though they won the challenge, they lost the weigh-in, and it was time to send someone home. In looking at the people left, it was clear Courtney was the weak link and she was the one who could do it the best at home. The other three voted for her and she was sent packing.

Now home, Courtney is looking spectacular and says she can paint her toenails and cross her legs. She's training hard for the marathon and ready to compete at the finale.

The Biggest Loser airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
